Course overview

The course covers the design, installation and commissioning of small-scale solar PV installations to ensure they comply with the relevant requirements. The course includes an online multiple-choice exam and a practical assessment. 


Upon successful completion, you should be able to plan, install and hand over fully compliant solar PV installations. This qualification can also be used as proof of training as part of becoming MCS accredited.

  • What will I learn in this course?

    • Health and safety risks, including safe systems of work, relevant to solar PV installation
    • Solar PV system components and their purpose
    • Pre-work surveys and notification processes for PV installations
    • Familiarisation with the layout and contents of the IET Code of Practice 
    • Electrical requirements and protective measures for PV generation installations
    • Small-scale solar PV system design principles and installation techniques
    • Inspection, testing and commissioning of PV installations
  • Course Assessment

    An online, closed book multiple choice exam and a practical assessment.

  • Who is this course for?

    • This course is for competent electricians looking to further their skills and knowledge. 
    • This qualification can be used towards formal recognition of competence via a CPS or for MCS accreditation.
    • Minimum age requirement is 16.

    You must hold a current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification and one of the following qualifications:


    • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
    • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
    • Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification
    • Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker
    • Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services - Electrical Installation (Building and Structures)
    • Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification
    • Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings
    • EAL Building Services Engineering (Level 3) - Electrotechnical Installation
    • Equivalent historical qualifications. See EAS Table 4B/4C and the EAS Qualifications Guide
    • Or hold an ECS Gold Card, as a JIB Electrician or Approved Electrician

    Please note: Standalone vocationally related qualifications (technical certificates) are not acceptable as proof of competence.

    The initial course fee covers the cost of the first attempt at a course exam or practical assessment. If you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, we will advise you on how to request a resit and inform you about the associated cost.
