City and Guilds 2377-77 Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing (PAT)

Commonly referred to as the PAT course, the 2377 is designed to teach individuals how to assess electrical equipment to ensure that it is safe for use. While the course used to focus solely on portable appliances, it now covers all electrical equipment, which is typically not checked during installation periodic inspection and testing.

Course overview

This course is delivered over two days with an online multiple-choice exam and a practical assessment on the second day.


Upon successful completion, you should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the inspection and testing requirements of the IET Code of Practice and be able to assess electrical equipment for continued safety and compliance.

  • What will I learn in this course?

    • Familiarisation with the layout and contents of the IET Code of Practice 
    • Definitions and terminology used in the IET Code of PracticeResponsibilities and health & safety requirements
    • Electrical units relating to the inspection and testing of electrical equipment
    • Construction classes for electrical equipment and how they provide against shock
    • Requirements and procedures for inspection and testing of electrical equipment
    • Records required for in-service electrical equipment inspection and testing

  • Course Assessment

    • 100-minute online multiple-choice exam (open book)
    • Practical assessment covering the use of test instruments

  • Who is this course for?

    • This course is suitable for anyone who may be required to check that electrical equipment is safe for continued use. 
    • In addition to electricians, this course can be useful for landlords, office staff or caretakers in situations where regular checking of electrical equipment safety is required under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.  
    • All delegates should be able to understand and retain technical information. The minimum age requirement is 18.

    The initial course fee covers the cost of the first attempt at a course exam or practical assessment. If you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, we will advise you on how to request a resit and inform you about the associated cost.
